100% Short TNA

Systems are in agreement again today - about midway thru the Santa rally. The JT Composite now moves to 100% short TNA, or long TZA if you wish. Additionally, the VXX system kicked off a buy signal (which in 2014 will officially be tracked here in favor of the JT Composite). I'm still developing a name, but since its goal is to earn 5% in 5 days, I'm considering going with "5-in-5" or "VIX 55". To get the 5%, it requires the use of the 2x UVXY (long and short) ETF rather than 1x VXX or XIV. Also as I've stated before, the system works with gold miners (GDX) so there will be a "GDX 55" system as well which will officially trade DUST/NUGT. The 55 system would probably work on plain GLD when trading UGLD and DGLD but I'm not too interested in those.

Again, more details on the "5-5" systems are forthcoming, but for now I will open a 50% position in UVXY at 15.88. Target (limit sell) price will be set for 16.67. I will scale into the position and if it goes lower, I will adjust the target sell price to 5% above my average buy-in.  Chances are good it could go lower considering the Santa rally lasts thru Jan 2.

CCI is moving back to cash, but JTS is opening a short position in TNA today. My UVXY trade tagged 19.95 this morning and covered. I was happy at the time b/c shortly after, it was back to 21. Now look at it... :-/ Oh well, I'll take the 5%. I will remain in cash. I will wait for either a 100% JTComp signal or a GDX/VXX signal before getting back in the market. Thanks!

100% Long XIV

Both CCI and JTS are going long today. I'll ditch my TZA from Nov 22 for a small gain. This is where I would normally go long XIV. But incidentally, both my VIX and GDX systems are making moves today. Since I'm ditching the JTS and CCI in 2014, I'm going to try out these new systems officially here for the first time using real money. I'll be shorting UVXY and going long NUGT - looking for a 5% profit in each. There is a chance both could continue to move against me so I will hold back some cash just in case. Again, my exit will trigger on a 5% profit. Immediately after purchasing, I'll set a sell limit order and let them both ride. I'll give both trades around 5-6 days to hit my limit sell before I make a contingency exit. Thanks all for being patient as I transition to new strategies that are easier for me to follow/track/trade and should be significantly more profitable as well. We'll see about that last part... :)

To update from a previous post, I'm still working out some kinks with a new volatility trading method that should go live in 2014 - trading XIV, VXX, or UVXY. I've found the same rules work very well for gold miners (GDX) as well, which means I'll be dabbling in DUST/NUGT. Coincidentally, the GDX test system went long NUGT on the open today, looking for a 10% gain as a trigger to exit. In the future, the target will likely be set at 5%. Get in, get a quick 5%, get out. Man, after a couple years of not missing an update I got completely sidetracked on Friday and forgot to post. It was a hold signal for all those counting. This busy stretch I'm in continued today and caused me to miss the pre-close update as well. Shameful. :) After an ugly open for bears, things eased as the day unfolded and losses were pared. Both systems continue to hold the short signal again today. Today's candle doesn't seem too bull friendly so I wouldn't be shocked to see a pullback in the near future. One can hope anyway... CCI Sells. 50% Short TNA

CCI sells out of its long position as a cautionary move.  There still may be some upside follow through the next few days, but the CCI system is seeing too much risk to remain long. The JTS will stay short.  Thus the JT Composite moves to 50% short TNA.  I'm going to remain on the sidelines for now.

I didn't get all the system stats done as I had hoped, but did complete my personal stuff.  I experienced a large drawdown this summer.  In late June, I was sitting pretty at +13% for the year.  Now I'm down over 11%.  I'm a bit bummed but I know there is plenty of time to get it back, especially if volatility is going to pick up.

Unhealthy...JTS stays short.

Looked like JTS would've finally gone long today, but the market health qualifier flipped to unhealthy today (warning of a possible bigger selloff)... and the unhealthy signal today says to hold the short position. So with the JTS remaining short and the CCI long, the JT Composite will remain in cash. I will hold my partial short. I will mention that SPY's CCI value is very stretched to the downside. In the past, when it's been this stretched, the market had 1 or 2 more down days and then skyrocketed to the upside. Just FYI. See you tomorrow, thanks!

I can tolerate a 1-2% loss in my TZA each day. That is somewhat ok with me in the world of trading. What kills me is how badly my UVXY is getting crunched these past few sessions. Just fired up the computer - Ouch! - I had a feeling this would happen what with bullish July 1st seasonality and $85bil/mo POMO, but ya can't always trust or trade feelings.  Both TZA and UVXY are taking a huge hit.

Systems were giving short signals a short while ago, but have reverted back to hold signals.  Either way, all systems remain 100% short.  I see no reason to deviate yet.  My guess is a few more days of strength followed by significant weakness into the 2nd weak of July.  We'll see.  Take it easy. J

It's one of those days for my systems.  Short signals coming from all directions!  Time to load up the truck.  JTS is generating a very robust (2nd) short signal.  CCI is flipping to short as well.  JT Comp moves to 100% Short TNA.  I'm opening a large position in TZA.  May even grab some UVXY to "diversify". :)  Take care. JTS flips to a short signal.  CCI sells its long position and heads to sidelines.  This pushes the JT Composite into a 50% short TNA position.  VIX futures are back in contango which changes the preferred short ETF from VXX back to small caps.

50% Long XIV TNA (edited )

Sold out of my shorts too soon this morning. At the time, I knew TZA would go higher and yet I ignored this knowledge in favor of some profit taking. Trading is very tricky and plays games with your head.

Very pleased to see both systems nail this move. But now the mean-reversion happy system otherwise known as the CCI is going long today. The superior JTS is not and will instead offer up a "cover" signal and head to the sidelines. So the JT Composite flips to 50% long XIV. Despite the 20%+ spike in the VIX, futures remain in a weak state of contango (just barely) thus the XIV for the long trade. If I were taking a long trade on the close, I would personally opt for TNA but that's just me. I'll be sitting this one out in cash. Another down day tomorrow would almost certainly flip the JTS long but I'm getting ahead of myself. Sit back, grab some popcorn and relax in cash for now. Take care and congrats to all the shorts!

JTS Shorts

Jts moves to a short signal but cci remains long. Neutral. Jt comp moves back to cash which is where I'll stay. I'm on vaca next week but I'll try to get signals posted on time. Thx! Good weekend.

JTS has flipped to unhealthy mode and will remain in cash today.  CCI keeps holding out for a mean reversion play to the upside.  JT Comp remains 50% long XIV.  I will stay on the sidelines for now.  Thanks.

50% Long XIV (JTS Covers!)

After what seems like forever in the trading world, JTS finally covers the short position and heads to cash.  CCI remains long.  This configuration places the JT Comp in a 50% long XIV position.  I will remain in cash for a couple reasons:  I'm only following 100% signals and 2, I'm not sure this pullback is finished yet.   Will wait and see... Thanks and best wishes.

CCI stays long, but the JTS won't flip long today (stays short).  JT Composite remains in cash.  I ditched my TZA today on weakness and I'm back once again to following the JT Comp.  I'll wait on the sidelines until the next 100% signal.  Thanks all.
